hollywood postcard

For my project, I incorporated both archival imagery and sound. I used a found image of old actors holding hands, dancing and created a 3d model. I had the model be very abstracted, the faces removed and just in black and white colors. The figures become distorted, and somewhat unidentifiable without knowing the original image. At some point in the piece, the face of the original photograph's woman overlays atop the 3d model. I wanted the model to feel as if they were moving, but very disjointedly. They look alive but barely, almost animatronic. For the music, I used open access sound from films A Star is Born and A Farewell to Arms. Both of which I hope are actually open access! I cut this sound up, repeated it, changed the pitch and reverb so that it echoed and sounded rather eerie. I think it helps develop the figures and the setting of the work more. The figures and the music work together to conjure up this image of old hollywood, but one that's not totally developed or right. The figures move unnaturally, the music doesn't flow, and things are somewhat out of place. I'm trying here to poke holes in the perfect images and sounds created in this period. Every actor was incredibly polished, always smiley, the music was dramatic and romantic. It's meant to sort of look a postcard, the figures flat and very posed.
